What “something big” are you expecting this year 2009?

Big Mak Blog Contest

I had been a teacher for more than a decade already. I taught in the public and private schools alike. At first, I wanted to be a musician or to be get a Bachelor’s Degree in Music but something big happened. I took up a Bachelor’s Degree in Education because a degree in Music was not available in the college where I enrolled. But I was able to join a college choir and became a Glee Club member for the four years that I was studying. We had been to different places and sang songs to different people or groups. And something big happened to us as members of WNC Glee Club (WNC stands for West Negros College but now it is known as WNU -West Negros University). We were able to join the NAMCYA (National Music Competitions for Young Artists) at CCP Manila, Phil. and won second place nationwide. That was a great experience we have had when I was still in college.

Something big for me this year is quite different from the young ones. I had a lot of experiences in the past that made me a better person. I had taken my post graduate studies when I was still working in the Phil. but wasn’t able to take the exam because we were led to another phase of life. And that’s where we are now, where God leads us.

As what I have said, I had experienced “Big Events” (something big) from the past until now that proves the greatness of our God. There’s another big event that happened to us recently when we were in the Phil. and I can prove “How Great our God is” you can check the details in my other blog at Miracles Do Happen in my other blog.

In connection with this “something big” I joined the biggest blog contest for 2009 entitled “Big Mak Blog Contest” and they have prizes at stake:

The Inconvenience of Technology

Last month I started making and preparing lessons for our English Summer Workshop at the center. I kept all my files and records inside the computer. I recorded all the things needed for the workshop such as the lessons for levels 1 and 2, crafts to be done by the students, games, and other English activities.

I was shocked last week when I can’t open our computer then we asked our manager if we can send it to the shop for check up. It was found out that it has a lot of viruses and the files can’t be saved anymore. Sometimes, computers and other technology are helpful to many users but at times it gives stress and hard times.

That happens to me today. When I knew that all the files were lost I felt bad. Everything was lost in the computers, all the files were deleted because it can’t be fixed anymore and the files cannot be retrieved. I started doing it again for the second time. It’s a waste of time and effort but anyway, I’ve learned a lesson not to use that computer anymore.

Yummy Sunday #1

Every Sunday we usually attend Thai services. We find it more interesting although we could not fully understand the language. For us it’s more fantastic and our sons wanted to go there every Sunday.

For a couple of weeks, I’d been craving for a Thai food, they call “Ratna.” When we went to the church I was so glad because they prepared the food I was craving the past weeks.

It’s their custom to prepare food on Sundays, then right after the service, everyone will join the group for lunch. Thai food are really great and spicy of course but tastes good. You will really amazed how they cook with all the spices!

Language Barriers

Last Monday as what I have mentioned in my other post, we went to a Technology School to promote our center. There are a lot of private schools involved. Each school presented a program. We had our presentation on the first day. Almost everybody came on that day.

On the second day, I met one of the teachers in the school where I worked a year ago. She looked at our promotions and smiled. I told her I’m already working in this center. She is a Thai and she had the difficulty in speaking English. She was asking a lot of questions and I’ll just say yes or smiled at her because I couldn’t understand the way she speaks.

Before they left with her friend, she told me, “Oh Sarah you are rich now”, I just laughed and told her “NO”. Then they left, I started to smile and I reiterate what she said to my hubby that we are rich, and I told him, if she only knew. Then my teenager smiled and said, because Mama you agreed to her when she asked you that you are the owner of the center. I said, “Really???” with a shocking voice. I didn’t understand what she said, I told my teenager. I was planning to explain again but I didn’t bother anymore. They might misunderstood me again.

Language barrier had been our struggle here in Thailand, a lot of times we were misunderstood especially when we talk to the locals. But still we enjoy the place, the food, and the people.

Open House Promotions

Promotions are not easy. It takes hard time, giving yourself into it, and giving up your other needs. That’s what we did since yesterday until tomorrow. We were having an Open House activity. All private schools and technologies all over the city will do some promotions for their own school. And students were brought by their teachers to see the different promotions designed by each school.

On the first day, that was last Monday, our Thai manager did some promotions on stage with other schools, each school will represent a show or something to promote the school. While surfing the net the other day I found out about advertising and promotions. Our manager did the same. He looks different with a funny face. You really need to do something to attract the attention of the students. So, each school has its own role to play.

We gave out brochures to students and invited to do some activities we prepared for them and gave out gifts. It’s fun, though the place was so hot yet were able to manage. It’s a great day today!
